Alternative power for automobiles

The modern world runs on oil as do the automobiles that are used in the modern world. Oil is used in the form of gasoline, petrol and diesel to run automobiles. However, there are many problems that are faced when oil is used for powering vehicles.

The use of oil creates pollution as the burning of oils emits harmful substances into the atmosphere. The dependence on oil for powering vehicles is increasing because there is an increase in the number of vehicles across the world. But we all are aware of the fact that oil is a finite source that will finish one day. We, therefore, need to find some other means that can be used to run automobiles.

One solution to this problem is the use electric vehicles that run on chargeable batteries. The batteries on which the vehicles run need to be recharged very often and this is quiet cumbersome. So to overcome this problem, hybrid vehicles were introduced in which the batteries did not have to be plugged in for recharging. From then on, the use of alternative power resources to run vehicles has become popular.

Alternative power sources have been used to develop fuel cell vehicles that are powered by a certain amount of hydropower. The use of alternative power resources in fuel cell vehicles will not produce any harmful pollutants and also will adversely affect the environment.

Geothermal power

A large number of renewable energy sources and conventional energy sources are used that can generate power to meet the energy requirements of the world. The traditional sources of energy like coal and fossil fuels have been used to generate power for a long time. But the use of these sources has increased pollution and created a lot of health hazards for the living beings. Because these sources are non renewable energy sources, they cannot continue generating power for a very long time as their reserves are depleting everyday. So the need of an alternative power source arises to meet the energy requirements.

Geothermal power can be considered as a possible alternative energy source that can generate enough power to meet the energy needs of the entire world for a very long time. Earth power is the useful form of energy obtained from geothermal energy. The energy is generally in the form of electricity. Geothermal power can be harnessed from the earth’s core that is very hot and heats water and turns that is converted it into steam. This steam as a geothermal power product can then be used to run turbines which are connected to generators that convert the steam into geothermal power or electricity.

To harness geothermal power products, a well needs to be drilled into the earth’s surface to reach the geothermal reservoir. Once the geothermal reservoir is trapped, the geothermal power products like hot water or steam can rise to the surface and can be used to produce electricity.

Alternative energy resources

Alternative energy resources are the ones that are used in place of fossil fuels and other traditional sources of energy. The main alternative energy sources are solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, ocean thermal energy etc.

Solar energy is the energy obtained from the sun. Solar energy is considered to be the most important alternative energy resource because it is believed to be unlimited. This is a true fact since sun will exist for ever and thus provide energy for a very long time. Capturing solar energy requires a lot of money to be spent because the equipment required is very expensive.

Wind energy is the kinetic energy of the wind. This energy can be used to produce electricity that can be put to a number of uses. Wind is an unreliable source and hence wind energy needs to be stored for potential use. The storage of wind energy in huge quantities is expensive.

Wave energy is the energy obtained from waves. The waves are used to run turbines which in turn produce electricity. However, waves are unreliable.

Tidal power is the energy that can be harnessed from high and low tides. The main use of tidal energy is in the production of electricity. It is not an efficient source of power generation.

Ocean thermal energy is the energy that can be captured from the ocean in the form of heat. This heat can be used to rotate turbines and hence produce electricity. Ocean thermal energy has a great potential as an alternative energy resource.

Uses of wind energy

The energy obtained from the blowing wind is called wind energy. Wind energy can be harnessed in several different ways and put to many practical uses.

The oldest use of wind energy is transportation. Primitive sail boats made from woven mats were propelled by wind. Modern sail boats have light weight sails that work like aircraft wings and can be moved by the blowing wind in the desired direction. One of the traditional uses of wind energy is pumping and grinding. Windmills captured wind energy that was used to pump water in rural areas and also generate electricity. However, with the supply of electricity in rural areas, windmills are now rarely used to pump water and generate electricity. Traditionally, windmills were used to drive or turn heavy granite disks called millstones that were used to crush dried grains like wheat and corn to make flour.

The most important use of wind energy is the generation of electricity by using wind turbines. The shaft of a wind turbine is connected to an electrical generator. The wind energy rotates the shaft of the turbine and this movement converts the mechanical energy in the electrical generator into electrical energy. Today, electricity is generated by using wind energy on a commercial scale and is also used for domestic purposes.

Wind energy is not being used to its full potential yet. New technologies and methods need to be developed so that maximum benefits can be obtained from wind energy.

What is wind energy

Wind energy is the kinetic energy of the wind. This kinetic energy can be captured and converted to more useful forms of energy like mechanical energy or electrical energy. Wind energy finds many uses both for domestic as well as commercial purposes. Wind energy does not use any fuels and does not emit any harmful or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It is, therefore, an environment friendly form of energy.

The amount of energy in the wind depends upon the speed of the wind, air temperature, barometric pressure and Altitude.

Generally, the amount of wind energy is more at high altitudes and when the pressure is low. The more the speed of the wind, the more energy it possesses.

The cost of wind energy depends upon the initial cost of wind turbine installation and the amount of energy produced.

Usually the cost of installing a wind turbine is a lot. Wind turbines as equipments are very expensive. However, if the amount of energy produced by wind turbines is more, the costs of installation are overshadowed by the benefits of the electricity so produced.

With the use of better technologies, the wind turbine installation costs are decreasing and generating electricity by wind energy has now become a cost effective method for the same.

The use of wind energy is increasing all over the world. The main reason for this is that wind energy has several environmental, social and economic advantages. Because of these advantages, wind energy can be favorably used.

Enhanced geothermal power systems

Enhanced geothermal power systems are also called hot dry rock geothermal energy systems or hot fractured rock systems. These are geothermal power generation systems that use very high temperatures found in rocks below the earth’s surface.

These are also known as engineered geothermal power systems that extract heat from earth that consists of natural geothermal power systems with cracks or pores which are filled with hot water that is sufficient enough to generate power.

A bore or injection well is drilled into the hot rock to pump water at high pressure to generate electricity. Water travels through the fracture or cracks in rocks capturing the heat from rocks till it is forced out of the second borehole. The hot water so obtained is converted to electricity through either a turbine or a geothermal power plant.

A few enhanced geothermal power systems use supercritical carbon dioxide as a working fluid because it results in better geothermal power output.

These systems have a few advantages. One of the main advantages is that they are renewable method of power generation. Enhanced geothermal power systems do not emit carbon compounds into the atmosphere and thus do not degrade the environment. These systems are also scalable and modular and so can be handled easily. These systems are also easy and convenient to use.

The risks involved with these systems are that they may trigger earthquakes and there is unpredictability in drilling into fractured rock surfaces.

The use of these systems can power the world at a very minimal or no cost at all.

Wind power

Wind power provides a self reliant approach for producing electricity with relatively little maintenance cost. In financial terms, wind power retains high capital cost and low marginal cost. Sometimes wind power is also combined with hydro electric power for providing a better and consistent supply.

Unlike other electricity generation techniques, it does not emit any radioactive particles thus reduces the extent of pollution. The installation as well as generation has an inconsequential effect on environment. Wind power also eradicates the need of using any other fuel; in case of any power cuts, it provides continuous supply. The most significant advantage of wind power is that it does not consume any non recyclable source of energy like oil, natural gas and coal.

Several gadgets employed for converting kinetic energy into mechanical energy have been also manufactured like windmills and turbines. Some home made turbines have been also enlisted their higher efficacy in electricity production. The major factor that affects on the designing of turbines is its usage area like small wind turbines, unconventional wind turbines and record holding turbines.

In a conventional wind turbine three major components are integrated as electric generator (for conversion), propellers (also known as blades) and base (for elevation and support). Some advanced wind turbines may integrate many components apart from these three basic components.

From past few years, wind power generation has been appeared as one of the most important energy saving programs in renewable energy sectors. All these activities have provided a consequential contribution to the overall development of various states.
